5 Plateau Breakers When Weight Loss Stalls
Cutting calories more is rarely the answer to a plateau. If you have been dieting for over six weeks and the scale is stuck, one of these five moves usually restarts progress within two weeks.

1. Take a diet break
Eat at your maintenance calories for 7 to 14 days. This restores leptin, thyroid hormones and cortisol regulation. It sounds counterintuitive to eat more when you want to lose weight, but the metabolic bounce that follows a diet break often unsticks stubborn plateaus.
2. Add resistance training or double it
Muscle is metabolic real estate. Adding two 30-minute strength sessions weekly, or increasing existing sessions from two to three, can restart fat loss even without further dietary changes. Focus on compound movements — squats, deadlifts, rows, presses — with progressive overload.
3. Prioritise sleep and stress
Under six hours of sleep can single-handedly stall weight loss. So can chronically high stress. Track sleep quality for two weeks, protect the last hour before bed, and add a stress-management practice — walk, meditate, or breathe — for ten minutes daily.
4. Recalculate calories with new body weight
If you have lost 5 to 10 kilograms, your maintenance calories have dropped by about 100 to 200. What was a deficit six weeks ago may now be maintenance. A precise recalculation, or better yet a fresh coaching conversation with a dietitian, catches this quickly.
5. Change the training stimulus
Your body adapts to identical routines. Change reps, weights, exercises, or add a new modality — swimming, yoga, or dance. Novelty triggers new adaptations and often reboots stagnant fat loss.
